Alternative solution

The design incorporates a convenient/communicating stair between level 2 (first storey) and level 1 (basement). The building is fully sprinklerd. The opening size measured on the horizontal plane exceeds 10 m2. However, fire rated partitions are provided such that the size of the opening on the vertical plan is 9.45m2. The 9.45m2 area on the vertical plan meets the intent of the OBC in limiting the size of opening to stairs to 10m2. The size of the opening also meets the City of Toronto Buildings code interpretation bulletin B:85-1R1 which is based on BCC rulings 84-21-149 and 84-20-148.
